Veggie Boxes

Posted by Carey Wood on Saturday, October 27, 2012,

Next week is the end of the main season veggie boxes.  We feel we have come along with this year with them.  We started last year, earlier than expected, with boxes we created on our own, and you got what we put in them.  We started the winter veggies last year, but not regularly.   With the veggie boxes being a new program, we feel we have come a long way since last season.

This year, before the main season started, we had set up market style to allow choice in the boxes  Choices have alway...

pasta with speedy beefy tomato sauce

Posted by Carey Wood on Tuesday, October 23, 2012,
With me working days, Jeff has really been living up to preparing most of the meals.
He made the pasta with speedy beef tomato sauce meal on page 149 in the Fast Flavours book.
It was a nice surprise for me, since spaghetti has always been one of my comfort foods.  We do not eat it near as much as we use to, but it is still a favourite for me.  Others in the house would rather prepare rice.

As always the meal looked very similar to the picture.  Which surprises me we can have the meals look the...

Roasted sausage, peppers, and double fennel, page 102

Posted by Carey Wood on Sunday, October 14, 2012,

I choose this recipe because we had fennel in season and we are always asked what do to with fennel, and I always feel very limited.  Fennel is one of those vegetables I love, but have never experimented very much with.  Olivia would just eat the fern like candy.

I asked Jeff to make it for supper, I was off farm working for the day, and wanted to make the most of my time when I got home.  I wasn’t too sure what to expect as a meal though.  Chef Smith recommends having your favourite pa...

Autumn

Posted by Carey Wood on Thursday, October 11, 2012,

The autumn is a real busy time at the farm.  There is the harvesting for the CSA and veggies boxes, field clean up and preparing for next year, transitioning of the greenhouses and new this year tending to the tunnels.   We have been enjoying shorter working days, it has been nice sleeping until about 6:30, instead of the 5:30 summer time.  We have been quitting at supper time each night as well, instead of working until 9 or 10 when it gets dark.  The shorter days are great.

We had some C...

Pork Chops with Balsamic Cherry Tomatoes

Posted by Carey Wood on Friday, October 5, 2012,

The first recipe we tried was “pork chops with balsamic cherry tomatoes.”  Page 107, Fast Flavours, by Chef Michael Smith

We had just received our fresh pork and were eager to try it.  We wanted to do something more than just throw it on the grill.  My (Carey) parents were here visiting form Ontario for the weekend so it was a good time to try something new.  We like to try something new and use our guests as the guinea pigs all the time.  It can be a lot of fun.

We both enjoy cooking...

A day in the office

Posted by Carey Wood on Tuesday, October 2, 2012,

Here I am sitting in an office chair (on Monday) dreaming of being outside in the mud.  Jeff sent me a picture of sweet potatoes that he just dug.  We grew them as a bit of an experiment.  He only dug a couple to see how they were.  They need to be out before the frost really hits, so hopefully this week he can get them out.

But its a nice day, and I think of all the digging that needs to be done.  Potatoes, carrots, parsnips and so on.  The fun we have in the field together is being put on h...
