Hurricane Irene

We spent part of the weekend preparing for Hurricane Irene.  We were unsure what to expect for winds, which is the main concern.  We have a clear view of the wind turbines in Summerside from our place which is about a half hour drive away.  If there are high winds we usually get them. 

In December 2010 we almost lost one of our greenhouses.  The wind so strong it sheared the bolts off on the hip board (which is halfway up the side).

Finally, plastic on the greenhouse

We have been trying to get plastic on the greenhouse near the CSA pickup for a long time.  We have to wait until the wind is next to nothing, or it won’t work.  As most Islanders know those days are few and far between.  We have had some windless days but usually have something else to do.  They usually fall on a harvest day and of course harvest days come first.

Busy times

We have been really busy lately with everything.  It seems like the garden is finally where we would have liked it about a month ago.  Peas, beans, broccoli and lots of other veggies are finally ready.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate with us for the remaining of the season.

We got over 8 rows of beans weeded yesterday, and discovered that one of our later planting of peas are ready as well.  Yesterday afternoon (Sunday) was a very productive day.  We got some transplants out, and had a...
